Well, not long ago I created an account on World of Warcraft. To begin, you choose which side you wish to be part of, the two factions are known as "The Alliance" and "The Horde". The Alliance is a side which comprises of Humans, Dwarves, Night Elves, Gnomes whereas The Horde is an affiliation of Orcs, Trolls, Undead and Tauren. The Alliance are the traditional "good guys" but, interestingly, there is the distinctive feel of a possible corrupt heart at the core of it. The Horde, on the other hand, are perhaps on the surface "the bad guys" but further delving into each of the races' histories shows that they only fight for survival and have been somewhat backed into a corner by The Alliance. This makes for a more interesting story premise than the cliche "good versus evil" script. After choosing my side, The Alliance, and my race, Human, I then got to choose my "class". For anyone who doesn't know, your class is what defines the skills your character will start with and gain throughout his or her career. I chose for myself a Paladin, a mixture of priest and warrior. He can wear heavy armours like platemail and chain, wield swords and hammers, and use an array of shields too, as well as casting healing prayers and prayers which boost his statistics and those of his friends. The beginning of the game introduces you gently to the fighting and quest systems. Quests are the main component of the game, completing them provides you with experience points, money and items with which to kit out your character. They range from the simple "we have a rat infestation, please kill ten of them and you will be rewarded" to the complex "Our city has been over-run, please delve deep underground and help us take it back, completing ABC and XYZ along the way. Most quests involve slaying lots of monsters, so by the time you complete and hand in the quest, you will have earned bonus experience just from killing, too. This is probably the best way to level, instead of just killing NPCs for no additional reward. The game also leads you to the next areas by quests such as "The guard sergeant in Stormwind needs your help, tell him I sent you." Not only does this give you a hint where to go next, it gives you something to do when you get there. Dotted throughout the game are special dungeons called "Instances". Instances are large dungeons with extremely powerful enemies inside, special rare items to be found, and large amounts of coins to plunder. Instances are usually for groups of players to complete at a time, being far too hard for all but the most powerful players to complete alone. While the game world is huge, you also have a special item called a "summoning stone". This is given to your player when you start the game and helps you return to town and stops you getting too lost. Most towns throughout the world have an inn or tavern, inside these buildings you can align your stone and make that town your hometown so that, when you wish to return from a great adventure, you simply activate your summoning stone and return to your hometown. I played until I was level 40 and had a lot of fun, but life got too busy to continue. I would definitely recommend WoW to anyone who has a hunger for a good MMORPG and quite a lot of time on their hands. The game is also regularly updated with tweaks, fixes and massive new add-ons of content. Overall score 8/10 comments on World of Warcraft |
